Luke McCann sets new Irish record at Diamond League.

Ireland's Luke McCann broke the national 1000m record on Wednesday night to finish seventh in the Monaco Diamond League, while Jake Wightman won in a new world lead.

McCann, 24, clocked 2:16.40 to beat the previous record of 2:17.58 set by Olympian David Matthews in September 1996, two full years before McCann was born.

In February of this year, McCann lowered the Irish indoor 1000m record to 2:17.40 in the USA.

Scot Wightman had to settle for bronze at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham on Saturday, ending hopes of a summer hat-trick.

But he showed what he can do in Monaco, beating Canadian Marc Arop in 2:13.88 – the ninth fastest of all time and the meeting record.

American Clayton Murphy completed the top three.
